THEATRE POSTER PROJECT | 莎士比亚戏剧节海报项目
This is a poster project hypothetically designed for the Shakespeare Festival in the National Theatre in London. The project contains a series of posters for three different performances, including Hamlet, Othello, and As You Like It. By combining etching-like drawings, abstract textures, and classical script typography, I mean to show the main emotional conflicts and values behind each play in correspondence with the tone and aesthetics of the proposed client, London Public Theatre. According to the research, I processed the information and synthesized them into three focal themes and one for each play. For Hamlet, I focused on "greed and revenge". For Othello, I targeted on the theme of "rumour and jealousy". In terms of As You Like It, I wanted to show "love and bond" in my designs. Lines are the heart of Shakespeare's plays. Thus, I used typography as a mean visual element in my posters. With experiments on handwriting, I wanted to let the typography speaks for itself. I mapped them out in abstract shapes to expressively resemble the decisive values undermined in each
play. Besides, with the etching-like hand-drawings, I meant to embody the time-honoured merit of these classical theatrical masterpieces. With visual metaphors and manual textures, I wanted to re-represent these classics in a poetic and exquisite representation. Overall, I represented the complex conflicts in a minimal and expressive visual language with visual rhetorics and symbolization. With restrained visual elements, I give the audience an intuitional and emotional experience. I hoped the visual communication could be immediate and effective, making the audience precisely catch the main ideas.
